The Place of Sacrifice

One of the most important monuments of the city of Kalavryta and also of Holy Worship is the Place of Sacrifice. It is located on the hill of Kapi, east of the city of Kalavryta in route to the Ski Center. This is the Place where men over 13 years old were executed  by the Germans on December 13, 1943.

Municipal Museum of the Holocaust

One of the most historical monuments of our city is the Municipal Museum of the Holocaust. This historical and martyr suffered place is inextricably linked to the events of Occupation and particularly the terrible tragedy of December 13, 1943, The Black Monday of Kalavryta that moved and shocked all humanity.

Palaeologinas Mansion

On the road St. Alexiou (behind the main square) there is an edifice of rare beauty of the 15th century, the "Mansion Palaiologina", which has been restored to its original form and takes you back to the era of the famous Palaeologos family. In historical sources it is indicated that the mansion was probably built by Thomas Palaeologus, when the famous Frankish fortress of Geoffroy de Tournay was destroyed and the year 1440 was passed on to his brother Constantine, and by that time Kalavryta city was evolved into an important spiritual center. At the same time, Constantine Paleologos likely donated the palace to Princess Catherine Palaeologos, who was the daughter of a noble family from the region of Chalandritsa and a relative of the Imperial family. It is curious that despite the dramatic adventures of the nation, the legendary "Master Paleologina" has survived all the devastation of the city with the only damages of the wear time and some changes from the Turks. The building is divided into three floors with a total area of 530 sq.m.

Castle of Kalavryta

The castle of Kalavryta or Castle of Oria, is located on a hill, east of the town of Kalavryta, at about 1.5 km from the city center. It was built during the period of Latins, by the first Baron of Kalavryta, Otto de Tournai (Othon de Tournay), after 1208. The hill is physically fortificated at an altitude of 1170 meters whilst the town of Kalavryta is at a height of 750 meters from the sea. So, it dominates from about 400 meters above the city, on the side of Helmos. Around the castle there was a dense network of towers and regional fortifications, whose purpose was to alert the castle on time, and control all passages. On the hill where the castle is located, there is a plateau about 30 or 20 acres, which was inside the castle. On the western side of the hill there are ancient ruins of the medieval era. Today there are only ruins of the Castle.
